Congratulations to AMSI Board Member, Professor Peter Taylor who was recently awarded the 2019 ANZIAM medal. The most prestigious honour bestowed by Australian and New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ANZIAM), the award recognises research achievement, impact on applied and industrial mathematics and contribution to ANZIAM.

An Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow in the University of Melbourne’s School of Mathematics and Statistics, Peter is Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers (ACEMS). Globally respected for his work on matrix-analytic methods, he contributions include to the research community include high-level leadership and editorial roles and supervision of over 70 research students.

AMSI Director, Professor Tim Brown said the award was very well deserved recognition of Peter’s enormous contributions and leadership within the Australian and New Zealand mathematics and statistics community, particularly as a global expert in scholastic modelling and applied probability.

Professor Brown said he was delighted to see Peter’s work and impact on global advancement of scholastic modelling and applied probability recognised in this way.

“Peter’s work has had wide-ranging impacts on telecommunications, biological modelling, healthcare, economics and disaster management,” he said.

Recently, Peter has been interested in the interaction of stochastic modelling with optimisation and optimal control under conditions of uncertainty. A field leader, he is regularly asked to present at international conferences.

He previously held roles as Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Division of the Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ANZIAM) and President of the Australian Mathematical Society.

Last year, Peter wrote about the benefits of mathematical research and the pathways to impact in the 7th edition of the AMSI Update. You can catch up on his article here.
